dairy-iconIn 1978, Charm developed a test that reduced dairy antibiotic testing from days to a matter of minutes. This helped reduce expensive and brand-damaging recalls and significantly improve dairy safety programs. Today, over 75% of the world’s raw milk (bovine, goat, sheep, camel) is tested with Charm test kits.

Pressing issues facing the dairy industry have multiplied. Working as a partner with farmers and processors, Charm Sciences has kept pace with the global testing requirements of the industry to ensure that milk and dairy products are among the world’s safest foods; testing not only for contaminants, pasteurization and sterility levels in the milk, but for sanitation levels of processing equipment as well.

In addition to testing kits, Charm developed equipment that provides solutions to the ever-changing landscape of today’s dairy industry including the movement from lab to field. Charm has designed smaller, portable, battery operated incubators/readers for use on a truck, in the field, wherever needed, that can not only give testing results on the fly, but can then send data results and graphs to your PC or printer.

Feed & Grain

feed-iconIn the past, farmers traditionally have not had a food safety plan in place. Global markets and regulations have dictated a change in that mindset, and we at Charm Sciences partnered with farmers to create test kits and equipment to suit their needs. Charm Sciences provides the feed and grain industry with accurate, easy-to-perform, rapid tests for mycotoxins (e.g., aflatoxin, DON, fumonisin, ochratoxin, T-2/HT-2 toxins, and zearalenone) antibiotics and pesticides.

Grain storage and handling facilities have had to introduce various measures to ensure product safety. The transportation of grain is a key element to that safety, and government regulators expect facilities to know what previously traveled in any container before grain is introduced. If any of the government’s listed prohibited products were hauled, grain employees need proof of cleanliness. With Charm food safety tests, not only can crops can be accurately tested for mycotoxins and antibiotics to be promptly received, but shipping containers and processing facilities can be tested with hygiene tests.

Food & Beverage


An appetite for variety, and desire for year-round food products and ingredients have increased demand on global products, greatly complicating the food supply chain. Differing regulations and processing standards make the safety trail difficult to follow. The US Department of Agriculture states that, in the US alone, the three most heavily imported items are also those with the highest violation rate; seafood (sanitary issues), vegetables (pesticides) and fruit (sanitary issues).

Many government regulations are now shifting the responsibility of food safety from responding to contamination issues, to preventing them. FSMA, The Food Safety Modernization Act signed into law in the United States in 2011, is a strong example of this switch in mindset.

The World Health Organization identifies water quality as a critical element in global disease prevention. It has been instrumental in spreading the word about increasing access to safe drinking water, and improving sanitation, hygiene, and water management to reduce the risks of water-borne infectious diseases.

Water municipalities can prevent outbreaks of disease and contamination by checking their water supply for microbial and chemical contaminates. Charm’s water quality diagnostics help protect and improve water quality by rapidly identifying fecal indicators and contaminants, such as coliphage, coliform, and E. coli, to identify “at risk” water supplies for viral and bacterial pathogens. Charm also makes tests for detection of chemical contaminates such as pesticides and antibiotics.  Charm ATP tests may be used to assess cleanliness of storage tanks, CIP waters and distribution systems and can provide an early indicator of undesired biologic activity in water sources.  These tests are used to ensure safe drinking water, process waters, surface waters, and bottled water.
