Charm CowSide II is a broad-spectrum microbial inhibition assay that detects inhibitors, such as antibiotics – close to EU and US established regulatory levels. Enhanced sensitivity to beta-lactams, sulfonamides, aminoglycosides and tetracyclines make CowSide II a valuable, cost-effective tool for screening raw commingled and ultra-pasteurized cow milk.

CowSide II kits consist of single service vials that contain pre-measured bacterial spores, media and a pH indicator. The pre-dispensed reagents ensure uniformity and eliminate reagent transfer steps. This helps to prevent reagent loss and inadvertent contamination.

The starting color in the vial is blue. Milk is added to the vial and incubated. Spores germinate and grow, generating acid which is indicated by color change to yellow. If antibiotics are present in the milk, microbial growth is inhibited so that no acid is generated. Thus antibiotic positive samples remain blue.
