The Charm II Competitive Assay for Sulfonamides is an FDA-approved screening/regulatory test acceptable for the detection of sulfamethazine, sulfadiazine, sulfadimethoxine, and sulfathiazole in milk (US FDA IMS-a-33). Charm II Sulfonamide Tests are designed for use by veterinary, laboratory, and regulatory personnel.

Charm II Sulfonamide Tests use a binding reagent with specific receptor sites that bind sulfa drugs. The binder is added to a sample extract along with an exempt amount of labeled sulfamethazine (tracer). Any sulfa drugs in the sample compete for the binding sites with this tracer. The amount of tracer that binds to the receptor sites is measured and compared to a previously determined Control Point. The Control Point is the cutoff point between a negative or positive sample. The greater the amount of tracer measured, the lower the sulfa drug concentration in the sample. The smaller the amount of tracer measured, the greater the sulfa drug concentration in the sample.
