charm ii_newlogo Charm provides the Charm II Sulfonamide Test to detect all members of the sulfonamide or sulfa drug family in feed and grain. Some common sulfa drugs include sulfadimethoxine, sulfamethazine, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfathiazole, sulfadoxine, sulfadiazine and sulfaquinoxaline. Sulfonamides are bacteriostatic antimicrobial agents that compete with folic acid synthesis in bacteria. Sulfa drugs are known to provoke allergic reactions in humans, and in the case of sulfamethazine, toxicity studies have shown follicular cell adenomas in mice.

How It Works
Charm II Sulfonamide Tests use a binding reagent with specific receptor sites that bind sulfa drugs. The binder is added to a sample extract along with an exempt amount of labeled sulfamethazine (tracer). Any sulfa drugs in the sample compete for the binding sites with this tracer. The amount of tracer that binds to the receptor sites is measured and compared to a previously determined Control Point. The Control Point is the cutoff point between a negative or positive sample. The greater the amount of tracer measured, the lower the sulfa drug concentration in the sample. The smaller the amount of tracer measured, the greater the sulfa drug concentration in the sample.
