The Kidney Inhibition Swab (KIS) is a simple to use inhibition test for screening broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs in fresh or thawed kidney tissue.

KIS reagents are self-contained, solvent-free, and pre-measured in a single use, disposable swab format. Results take approximately 3 hours. Speed, sensitivity, and simplicity are clear advantages with the KIS Test over conventional tests used in the meat industry e.g., FAST, SOS and STOP.

USDA-FSIS APPROVED

In October 2008, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) awarded Charm Sciences a contract to provide Charm KIS Tests to USDA inspectors at slaughter facilities to screen for sulfonamides and antibiotic drugs under the National Residue Program (NRP).  FSIS will begin implementing the Charm KIS Test in phases starting with cattle (FSIS notice 50-09), and eventually implement it for all livestock.

PRINCIPLES

KIS Test is designed to absorb kidney serum at slaughter facilities. If antimicrobial drugs are present, microbial growth in the KIS vial is inhibited, which prevents a color change to yellow. Thus, positives remain blue.

APPLICATIONS

The KIS Test has been successfully applied to beef and pork kidney.

The KIS Test has also been adapted for on-farm testing of antibiotics in water, feed extracts, poultry serum, and live animal urine samples, making it an ideal tool for pre-harvest HACCP.
