Nitrofurans

Nitrofurans, like furazolidone and furaltadone, are synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics that were used in animal, aquaculture and honey production. Nitrofurans have antibacterial and antiprotozoan properties.  In bacteria and animal studies, the parent drugs and their metabolites showed mutagenic and carcinogenic characteristics. That led to the prohibition of nitrofuran use in the treatment of animals used for food production. Despite those bans, residues mostly in the forms of metabolites (e.g. commonly referred as AOZ, AMOZ) continue to appear in the food supply.

CHARM II AOZ Test Print E-mail

Nitrofurans are used in the maintenance of bees for honey production. Nitrofurans are rapidly metabolized and covalently bound with proteins or peptides.  It is possible to detect the conjugated metabolite as well as the parent drug with the Charm II system using a sequential binding assay. Results are obtained in less than 40 minutes including sample preparation. There are 4 nitrofuran drugs. This test is for AOZ metabolite or parent drug.
